My ultimate spring cleaning checklist
When you’re tackling a large task like spring cleaning, it can be hard to know where to begin. If you’re not careful, you’ll find yourself overwhelmed and feeling stuck, either working inefficiently or not getting anything done at all.
When asked for my top spring cleaning hacks, I always share the same thing: It’s important to break spring cleaning down into bite-sized chunks. Aim for smaller tasks that can be tackled one at a time. Clean in sprints, or use the Pomodoro method. You don’t have to do everything all at once, or even all in the same day. You can work on cleaning your kitchen one day, then bathrooms the next, and finish your bedroom over the weekend. It’s not about speed – it’s about taking the time to get everything done.
If you aren’t sure where to begin with your spring cleaning, read on for my ultimate spring cleaning hacks: my spring cleaning guide that never fails to help me tackle the season.
Throughout the home
First things first on our spring cleaning checklist: there are a few things that need to be tackled throughout your home. Do them all at once or chip away throughout the time you spend working on your spring cleaning checklist – it’s up to you!
- Wash baseboards
- Wipe walls
- Clean vents
- Replace air filters
- Replace lightbulbs
- Replace smoke alarm batteries
- Check if your fire extinguisher needs to be replaced
- Sanitize light switches
- Sanitize door handles
- Dust
- Mop
- Vacuum
- Deep clean carpets
- Polish hardware
Entryway
The entryway is the first impression anyone will get of your home, and it sets the tone for you when you walk in after a long day. The last thing you want is to be immediately met with mess or clutter.
- Clean floors
- Wash rug/front mat (if applicable!)
- Clean door
- Polish locks/knob
- Organize shoes
- Organize coatrack
Spring cleaning is a great time to evaluate your entryway space – is it working for you and your family? Do you need a better drop zone? Is there space to hang your keys or deposit the mail? Now is the time to create solutions.
Laundry room
The laundry room can quickly become cluttered with half-used cleaning supplies and that shirt that you swear you’ll take to the dry cleaner’s next week. It’s a small space, but don’t forget to include it on your spring cleaning checklist! A clean laundry room will help your entire home feel instantly cleaner.
- Clean floors
- Clean + sterilize the washing machine
- Empty dryer vents
- Organize laundry + cleaning supplies
- Take care of clothes that need to be mended or dry cleaned
If you don’t particularly enjoy doing laundry, an organized space will make the task easier – which means no more procrastinating on your laundry!
Kitchen
The kitchen is the heart of the home, and you deserve for yours to be a space where you can enjoy cooking. It’s easy for dirt and grime to accumulate in the kitchen from constant use, so it’s time to give yourself a clean slate!
- Clean floors
- Clear countertops
- Clean oven
- Clean stove
- Clean microwave
- Clean dishwasher
- Clean kitchen backsplash
- Clean sink
- Clean drain
- Polish fixtures
- Replace water filters
- Wipe out refrigerator and freezer shelves
- Defrost freezer
- Throw out expired food
- Organize the fridge and freezer
- Organize your pantry
- Organize cabinets and drawers
- Dust shelves and high places, such as the top of the fridge
- Wash sponges, dish brushes, and rags
- Boil a simmer pot on the stove for a fresh, clean scent
We all try to keep a clean kitchen, but it can be a hard space in your home to stay on top of. Giving your kitchen a deep clean is the perfect fresh start for spring.
Living room
The living room is one of the primary spaces you gather in your home. It’s where your family spends time together and your friends come over for a movie night. Let’s tidy up this space to make it even more warm and inviting.
- Wash slipcovers
- Vacuum soft furniture
- Wash throw blankets
- Clean throw pillows
- Dust/polish wooden furniture
- Dust electronics
- Sanitize remote controls
- Dust blinds
- Wash windows
- Clean curtains
- Dust lamps

- Mop hardwood floors
- Vacuum carpets
- Clean carpets
Freshening up your living room will make hosting all the easier, and creates a calm zone for your family to unwind.
Bathrooms
It may be many people’s least favorite task, but spring cleaning your bathrooms doesn’t have to be complicated! It’s all about decluttering for a minimalized space and keeping everything clean and sanitized.
- Declutter: toss old makeup and hygiene products, along with anything you don’t like or use. Go through towels and washcloths to see if it’s time to pull anything for the rag pile!
- Update first aid kit + over the counter medications
- Reorganize cabinets/draws and reoptimize storage where necessary
- Wash + sanitize makeup brushes and hair brushes
- Wipe down the vanity/sink area
- Wipe mirrors
- Clean floors
- Clean bathtub/shower
- Replace shower liner
- Wash shower curtain
- Treat drains
- Clean shower head
- Scrub grout
- Clean toilet
Bathrooms can easily get grimy, but trust me – a spring cleaned bathroom will make all the difference in your home.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms can often become a dumping ground for all of life’s odds and ends. Pro tip: try tackling one bedroom per day so that it doesn’t feel overwhelming!
- Declutter + reorganize closet (One of my favorite spring cleaning hacks? Turn all of the hangers in your closet backwards, then, as you wear each item, hang it back up the right direction. At the end of the season, donate anything you haven’t worn.)
- Wash all linens: sheets, blankets, duvets, bedskirts, etc.
- Flip mattress
- Clear + declutter tabletops
- Declutter + reorganize drawers
- Dust tabletops + decor
- Dust blinds
- Wash windows
- Clean curtains
- Vacuum
- Wash rugs
By spring cleaning your bedroom, you’ll give yourself a space to completely relax. Read a book, light a candle, and unwind in peace.
Office
Have a home office? Then you know how easily it can get cluttered as you try to juggle that WFH life. Work is busy enough – free yourself of mental clutter by spring cleaning.
- Dust
- Vacuum floors
- Vacuum office chair
- Shred old paperwork
- Clear tabletops of clutter
- Throw out old pens and battered office supplies
- Restock office supplies (new paper in the printer, fresh pens, refill the stapler, etc.)
- Sanitize computer mouse and keyboard
- Digitally organize your computer (Need help ditching the digital clutter? I’ve got you covered.)
- Untangle and properly store cords
Clearing out both the digital and physical clutter will make all the difference as you tackle the demands of the day.
Playroom/rec space
Whether it’s a playroom filled with your kids’ toys or a rec room that’s perfect for game nights and Netflix binges, even the most fun spaces in your home need a good spring cleaning.
- Organize toys into bins
- Donate any unused toys
- Wash stuffed animals and soft toys
- Sanitize plastic toys
- Dust entertainment center
- Vacuum floors
- Sanitize TV remote
- Organize games and declutter games that aren’t played
I always feel like I can enjoy a space more when it’s clean and organized, and rec space is no different! Plus, if you have kiddos, this is a great opportunity each year to teach them the art of decluttering and organizing :)
Remember: spring cleaning isn’t about perfection or doing it all at once! It’s about taking the time to care for your home and give yourself a fresh start for the season. I hope that this spring cleaning checklist has given you all of the cleaning hacks you need to get through your spring cleaning strong!
