Four ways to maximize small spaces

Do you have a small space in your home that you worry isn't big enough to keep up with your busy life? Sometimes, small spaces can make you feel like the walls are closing in on you, but don't worry - even if you feel like you've used up all the space in your home, you probably haven't! There are plenty of ways to maximize small spaces that you might have never thought about before. Let's dive into four of them!

Door space is prime organization real estate

We all know our homes are filled with doors: closet doors, kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, etc. What a lot of people don't know is that those doors offer great opportunities for organizational storage.

One way to maximize your door space is to use over-the-door storage solutions in closets and pantries. Whether you need somewhere to store your shoes, cleaning supplies, snacks, or truly anything else, over-the-door hanging organizers are versatile and functional.

Kitchen and bathroom cabinets also have door space you can use to add storage. For example, in a project I worked on with a client, I used spice grippers that stuck to the back of her kitchen cabinet door, which freed up a lot of shelf space. This simple, inexpensive solution made it way easier for her to navigate her shelves, and putting her most-used spices in the grippers allowed for easy access any time she cooked!

Build upward! Take advantage of your vertical space

Think about an area in your home where you'd be able to maximize your space by stacking or "building upwards." This could be a closet floor, a cabinet with no shelves, or something else! Don't let that space go to waste - I've got some hacks to make use of that available height.

First of all, you can always try to add shelving or move shelves around (if they're customizable) to add storage space. If that's not possible, however, I always recommend you explore stackable bins and/or drawer units.

Adding vertical storage not only expands the footprint of your space, but it's also an easy way to keep your belongings more organized, which in turn increases your productivity. My biggest tip when it comes to vertical storage is: Measure, measure, measure! Make sure to find the right products that will fit your space so you're using up every available inch.

Don't forget about your wall space

Going along with the idea of “building upward,” implementing organizing solutions on your wall is an extremely efficient way to use the space you have. Think about it this way… a blank wall is like an empty space on your floor. With your floor, you might use stackable bins or drawers, as mentioned above. With your wall, you can use shelves and hooks to add storage space that wasn't necessarily there beforehand.

Here are a few examples to get you started:

  • Rather than stuffing your purses in your closet or storing them on the ground, install some easy-to-use hooks to hang them. These hooks not only look nice, but they free up more space than you'd think!
  • Attach shelves to your walls to store whatever you may need. Whether it's books in your office, toiletries in your bathroom, or miscellaneous items throughout the house, shelves can be a great way to display belongings that need to be either visible or easily accessible.
  • Need a drop zone for things like keys and mail? Install a wall mount to help you keep important items in a space where you won't ever lose them, simultaneously increasing efficiency in your day-to-day life.

These are just three examples, but there are truly dozens more wall storage solutions out there that are both practical AND aesthetically pleasing.

Try multi-functional decor and furniture

Multi-functional decor and furniture are growing in popularity in the organization world.

What exactly do I mean by this? Think of items like lift-top coffee tables, decorative boxes and baskets, benches that double as storage chests, etc.

These inventive storage solutions can be found almost everywhere, and they are a great way to add some decor to your small space that serves a greater purpose!
