Do you have a big move coming up that you’re stressed about?
You’re not alone. A ton of people get overwhelmed by the moving process. But getting overwhelmed actually increases tension surrounding the move, making it an even worse experience.
Fortunately, implementing organizational tactics and systems can make for a super easy move. As your resident professional organizer, I’m here to share some of my favorite moving tips that help take the stress out of a move, whether it’s just down the block or halfway across the country.
Start in an easy room
Moving tip #1 is to make it easy on yourself. Start in an easy room so you get in the groove of decluttering, packing, and labeling! I recommend something like a linen closet, bathroom, or laundry room. Decluttering is easy because you’re really only pitching what’s worn down (linens) or expired (toiletries, laundry supplies), and there’s much less to pack in these spaces than in a master closet or basement. Because these are easier areas, you won’t get turned off from the process when you start, and you’ll realize it’s not as bad as you thought!
Avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box
There is nothing more frustrating than unpacking a box in one room, only to realize you have to drop items off in three other rooms for it to be fully emptied. A key piece of the organizing process is categorizing, and this goes for moving, too! Categorize your belongings by room and pack accordingly so you have as easy of a move as possible. Your future self will thank you!
As you place items into boxes, label those boxes! This is a key moving tip that will not only help you, but anyone helping you move as well. When 1) the name of the room that the box should go in and 2) the contents of the box are written on the outside, anyone carrying the box will know exactly where to drop it off, and anyone unpacking will be able to do so quickly since they won’t need to dig around for what they’re looking for. Easy move: achieved.
Note anything fragile
Does anyone else immediately think of the movie “A Christmas Story” when they hear the word “fragile?” No? Just me? Maybe it’s my Cleveland roots…but I digress.
This one is a bit of a no brainer, but it’s still worth mentioning, as it’ll give you peace of mind that your fragile belongings will be treated carefully. When you’re labeling, simply note anything that’s fragile. Easy enough, right?
When unpacking, start with the essentials and then go room by room
If you’re looking to have an easy move, it’s important to avoid shiny object syndrome when unpacking. If you unpack sporadically, you’ll increase your chances of getting stressed out. Start by unpacking the things you’ll absolutely need to access within the first 24 hours of living in your new space. This would include toiletries, sheets, pajamas, etc. Then, unpack by going room by room. This keeps you on task and gives you a sense of accomplishment every time you finish a room!
And there you have it! Five moving tips that will keep you organized and efficient. I hope you found these helpful.
